Kätketty tarkastelee pyhyyden kokemusta. Maalauksissa ja installaatioissa toistuu jännite paljastamisen ja suojaamisen välillä: teokset näyttävät jotakin rajaamalla olennaisen pois suoran katseen ulottuvilta.
Maalauksissa katsojan ja maiseman väliin asettuu kangas tai muu este. Se toimii verhona pyhän ja arkisen välillä: se antaa aavistaa, mutta ei avaudu kokonaan. Kangas ei ole este, vaan suoja – merkki siitä, että jotakin halutaan pitää erillään ja koskemattomana. Pyhyyden kokemus syntyy etäisyydestä, joka sekä kätkee että on läsnä.
Valoinstallaatioissa valo paljastaa vain häivähdyksen pyhän läsnäolosta ja jättää ympärilleen varjoa. Olen tavoitellut tätä aavistusta kuvaamalla jotakin havaittavaa niin, että se on osin näkyvää ja osin piilossa. Näin syntyy tila, jossa katsominen ei ole pelkkää näkemistä, vaan myös rajojen ja etäisyyden hyväksymistä osana kokemusta.
Näyttely pohtii myös sitä, mikä tekee jostakin pyhää: suojaaminen, salassa pysyminen ja etäisyys voivat olla olennainen osa kokemusta. Kätketyt ja jakamattomat pyhyyden kokemukset kantavat eteenpäin, vaikka niitä ei voisi kokonaan sanoittaa.

Hidden explores the experience of the sacred. Both the paintings and the light installations revolve around the tension between revealing and protecting: they show something precisely by keeping the essential beyond direct view.
In the paintings something comes between the viewer and the landscape. It functions as a veil between the sacred and the ordinary: it allows a glimpse, but never fully opens. The veil is not an obstacle but a form of protection – a sign that something is to remain separate and untouched. The sacred is experienced in this very distance, which both conceals and makes present.
In the small, intimate light installations, light reveals only fleeting traces of the sacred while leaving shadows around them. I have sought to evoke this presence by depicting something perceptible as both partly revealed and partly hidden. In this way, the works create a space where seeing is not only about vision, but also about accepting limits and distance as part of the experience.
Hidden also asks what makes something sacred. Protection, concealment, and distance may be essential aspects of such an experience. Hidden and unshared encounters with the sacred can sustain us, even when they cannot be fully expressed in words.
Artist´s statement / bio
Elisa Tuohimaa on kempeleläinen kuvataiteilija. Hän työskentelee maalauksen ja installaatiotaiteen keinoin nähdyksi ja hyväksytyksi tulemisen tarvetta, läsnä- ja poissaoloa, valtaa ja kontrollia, oikeutta ja vaikeutta suhteessa minuuteen, sen historiaan ja ympäristöön sekä toiseen ihmiseen. Taiteellisessa työskentelyssä tärkeintä Tuohimaalle on pyrkimys jaetun kokemuspinnan tavoittamiseen ja löytämiseen. Maailmassa olemisen tuottama kipu onkin kenties hänen työskentelynsä punainen lanka.
Elisa Tuohimaa is a visual artist from Kempele, Finland. She works with painting and installation to explore the need to be seen and accepted, the dynamics of presence and absence, power and control, and the right and difficulty of relating to the self, its history and environment, and to other people. Central to Tuohimaa’s artistic practice is the pursuit of a shared experiential ground. The pain produced by the very condition of being in the world is, perhaps, the underlying thread that runs through her work.
