Merileväkokeilut ovat yrityksiä katsoa merimaisemaa toisin, uppoutua maisemaan ja virittäytyä merilevien toimijuuteen. Merilevien peittämä rantamaisema ei ole teoksissa pelkkä kuvattava kohde vaan levät osallistuvat kuvien tekemisen prosessiin materiaalisten ominaisuuksiensa kautta. Merileväkokeilut ovat kamerattomia ja ilman valoa värifilmille piirtyneitä tutkielmia, jotka ovat syntyneet merilevien ja valoherkän negatiivin ollessa fyysisesti kontaktissa toisiinsa.  

Kati Leinonen on oululainen valokuvataiteilija, joka on dokumentaarisissa taideprojekteissaan käsitellyt muun muassa nykypäivän hevoskulttuuria sekä muistin ja historian yhteen kietoumia. Viimeaikaisissa teoksissaan Leinonen lähestyy valokuvaa kokeellisena välineenä ja työskentelyn keskeisiksi teemoiksi ovat nousseet maiseman käsite, vaihtoehtoiset tavat kokea ja kuvata maisemaa.

Näyttely on osa Oulu2026-kulttuuriohjelmaa ja kulttuuri-ilmastonmuutosta.

Seaweed Experiments are an attempt to immerse in the landscape and to attune into the agency of seaweeds. In the images, the seaweed-covered shoreline is not merely a depicted subject, but the seaweeds participates in the image-making process through their material properties. Seaweed Experiments are camera-less studies created on colour film without light. They are formed through the physical contact between seaweed and a light-sensitive negative.  

Kati Leinonen is a photographic artist based in Oulu whose documentary art projects have explored, among other themes, contemporary horse culture as well as the intertwinings of memory and history. In her recent works, Leinonen approaches photography as an experimental medium, with key themes emerging around the concept of landscape and alternative ways of experiencing and depicting it.

The exhibition is part of the Oulu2026 cultural program and cultural climate change.
