A Body of Silk

Jenny Mansikkasalon Performanssi esitetään 7 kertaa 24.-27.6.2026 välillä. Esityspaikka on Ainolanpuistossa, Hupisaarilla, nurmella Taidemuseon takaa joelle päin. Yhden esityksen kesto noin 30 minuuttia. Esitysajat:

A Body of Silk -performanssi käsittelee ilma-akrobatiasta luopumista ja resonanssia, joka luopumisen jälkeenkin väreilee ilma-akrobaatin ja sirkusvälineen välillä. Sirkuskentällä se, ettei keho kestäkään äärimmäistä fyysistä rasitusta loputtomiin on jossain määrin tabu. Mansikkasalo haastattelee ammatistaan tästä syystä luopuneita taiteilijoita teosta varten.

Performanssin lähtökohtana on läsnäolo vertikaalikankaan kanssa. Mansikkasalo käy parhaillaan läpi prosessia, jossa hän pohtii elämää ilma-akrobaattiuden jälkeen: “Vaikka en enää kiipeäisikään kankaalle, kehoni muistaa miten se tapahtuu ja miltä se tuntuu. Tämä kehollinen tieto on olemisen ja liikkeellisyyden lähtökohta performanssissa. Kuvittelen olevani ilmassa. Ilma-akrobatia vaikuttaa edelleen kehossani, sillä se on vuosien saatossa muovannut sen.”

Teoksessa pohditaan muutosta, joka on usein niin hidasta, että se on tuskin huomattavaa, mutta joka yhtäkkiä tuleekin näkyväksi. Näin kävi Mansikkasalolle kehon rasittumisen kanssa. Kangaskin hapertuu vuosien saatossa ja voi yhtäkkiä ratketa.

Taideorganisaatio Hiljaisuus tukee Mansikkasalon teosta vuosina 2026-2028. 

The performance A Body of Silk by Jenny Mansikkasalo will be presented seven times between 24 and 27 June 2026. Each performance lasts approximately 30 minutes. Performance location is in Ainolanpuisto-park, Hupisaaret, from behind Oulu Art museum towards the river. Performance times:

A Body of Silk performance addresses the act of letting go of aerial acrobatics and the resonance that continues to vibrate between the acrobat and the circus prop even after that decision. Within the circus field, the fact that the body cannot endure extreme physical strain indefinitely is, to some extent, a taboo. For this work, Mansikkasalo interviews artists who have left the profession for this reason.

The starting point of the performance is presence with the vertical fabric. Mansikkasalo is currently going through a process of reflecting on life after being an aerial acrobat: “Even if I no longer climb the fabric, my body remembers how it happens and what it feels like. This embodied knowledge is the basis for being and moving in the performance. I imagine myself in the air. Aerial acrobatics still affect my body, since over the years it has shaped it.”

The work contemplates change, which is often so slow it is barely noticeable, yet suddenly becomes visible. This was the case for Mansikkasalo with the strain on the body. The fabric too wears down over the years and can suddenly tear.
